Students Find 2,000-Year-Old Roman Villa Under Their Gym

For years, students at Liceo Scientifico Cavour whispered about secret spaces beneath their gym floor. When curious teenagers finally ventured underground, they found shadowy corridors that turned out to be a 2,000-year-old Roman villa.

The discovery happened at a high school just steps from the Colosseum in Rome. After students explored the mysterious underground area, history and Latin teacher Claudia Marino contacted Rome's archaeological authorities to investigate what her students had stumbled upon.

Archaeologists began excavating beneath the gym in January 2026 and quickly realized the significance of the find. The underground corridors and chambers belonged to a wealthy residence dating to the mid-second century, now officially named the Domus Liceo Cavour.

The timing couldn't have been better for researchers studying ancient Rome. The school sits in a historic district once home to famous Romans like Cicero, Pompey, and Octavian, but centuries of construction have buried most traces of that era under modern buildings.

Inside the villa, archaeologists found stunning evidence of elite Roman life. Floral and figurative frescoes still decorated the walls, intricate stucco details adorned vaulted ceilings, and large irregular tiles formed beautiful mosaics.

The site tells multiple stories across time. Alongside the ancient Roman artwork, researchers discovered graffiti left by 20th-century students and tourists who had secretly explored the space over the decades.

The Ripple Effect

The discovery opens doors far beyond archaeology. Rome's archaeological superintendency and school officials are planning to transform the villa into an educational resource, with students serving as tour guides for future visitors.

Only a portion of the villa has been excavated so far, and the structure extends even farther beneath the school grounds. What started as teenage curiosity may have uncovered just the beginning of a much larger story waiting beneath their feet.

Marino and archaeologist Filippo Coarelli presented the discovery publicly on May 28, celebrating how student curiosity led to uncovering nearly 2,000 years of hidden history. The gym floor that students walked across every day was actually the ceiling of an extraordinary time capsule.
