Sweden Installs 652 MW of Solar in Shift to Large Farms

Sweden just added enough solar power to light up thousands more homes, and the way the country is building renewable energy is transforming fast.

The Scandinavian nation installed 652 megawatts of new solar capacity in 2025, bringing its total solar power to 5.4 gigawatts. While that number dropped from 2024's record 848 megawatts, the story reveals an exciting shift happening beneath the surface.

Utility-scale solar farms surged to a record 198 megawatts in 2025, jumping 46% from the previous year. These massive installations now account for 30% of all new solar power in Sweden, compared to just 7% in 2024.

The country's largest solar farm to date, the 100-megawatt Hultsfred project, came online last year alongside the impressive 64-megawatt Ax-el solar park. Developer Svea Solar announced plans for eight new solar parks totaling 500 megawatts, signaling confidence in the sector's future.

Residential solar installations did slow down in 2025, dropping 39% to 239 megawatts. The decrease came after Sweden ended a tax rebate program, combined with lower energy prices compared to 2022's spike and higher interest rates affecting household budgets.

But homeowners still represent more than half of Sweden's solar market, with over 287,000 small solar installations now connected to the grid. That's 90% of all solar plants in the country, showing how deeply renewable energy has woven into Swedish life.

The Ripple Effect

The battery storage market is booming alongside solar growth. Around 75,000 Swedish homeowners installed batteries in 2025, a 34% jump from the previous year, allowing families to store sunshine for cloudy days and help stabilize the electrical grid.

Alex Jankell from Swedish solar association Svensk Solenergi explained that large-scale solar combined with battery storage is becoming the new normal. These projects help manage electricity flow and reduce strain on the power grid during peak demand.

The challenge now lies in connecting all this clean power. High costs and long waiting times for grid connections remain obstacles, but Sweden is working on faster, more predictable permitting procedures to speed up the process.

Energy experts predict 2025 marks the low point before installations climb again. New European building energy requirements, streamlined permitting processes, and a recent surge in energy prices are all pointing toward renewed growth in 2026 and beyond.

Sweden's solar journey shows how renewable energy can take root even in a country known more for long winter nights than endless sunshine, proving that clean power works anywhere with the right commitment.
