Thailand Doubles Down on Solar, Wind to Slash LNG Imports

Thailand is making its biggest clean energy commitment yet, aiming to power more than half its grid with solar, wind, and hydropower within 25 years.

Energy Minister Akanat Promphan announced the ambitious plan will double the country's previous renewable energy target. Thailand currently relies on natural gas for over 60% of its electricity, with much of it imported as liquified natural gas from overseas suppliers.

The shift comes as Thailand recognizes the risks of depending on imported fuel during global conflicts. Recent disruptions in Middle East shipping routes highlighted how vulnerable the country's energy supply can be to events thousands of miles away.

"We need to build a cleaner and more self-reliant power system," Promphan told Bloomberg. The nation will unveil its updated 25-year energy roadmap this October, marking a historic first by including nuclear power through small modular reactors.

The timing couldn't be better for the transition. Thailand expects electricity demand to surge in coming years as data centers and advanced manufacturing facilities grow across the country. Meeting that boom with homegrown clean energy instead of imported gas will strengthen both security and sustainability.

Energy experts are already suggesting ways to speed things up. A recent report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis recommends reforming rooftop solar policies to accelerate deployment, which could reduce import dependence while keeping electricity costs stable for residents.

The Ripple Effect

Thailand's energy revolution extends far beyond its borders. As Southeast Asia's largest LNG importer, its pivot to renewables sends a powerful signal that emerging economies can choose clean energy without sacrificing growth or security.

The country's data center boom, which drives much of its rising electricity needs, means this renewable power will help run the digital infrastructure connecting millions of people across the region. Every solar panel installed and wind turbine spinning represents jobs created, air cleaned, and communities protected from volatile global fuel markets.

Other nations watching Thailand's transition may find inspiration in proving that energy independence and climate action aren't competing goals but complementary ones.
