Thailand Unveils Giant Dinosaur as Big as 9 Elephants

Scientists have just introduced the world to Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, a newly discovered dinosaur that makes most museum exhibits look tiny by comparison.

The long-necked herbivore stretched 88 feet from head to tail and tipped the scales at about 27 tons. That's roughly the weight of nine adult Asian elephants peacefully grazing together.

Researchers estimate this gentle giant roamed what is now Thailand between 100 and 120 million years ago. The discovery marks the largest dinosaur ever found in Southeast Asia, giving scientists new insights into the region's prehistoric past.

The first bones emerged a decade ago when locals in northeast Thailand stumbled upon the remains. However, the careful excavation process wasn't completed until 2024, with researchers painstakingly documenting each fossil.

Lead researcher Thitiwoot Sethapanichsakul, a Ph.D. student at University College London, calls it "the last titan" for good reason. The dinosaur was unearthed in one of the youngest rock formations where dinosaurs appear in Thailand, suggesting it may have been among the final giants before the region transformed into a shallow sea.

The name Nagatitan blends Asian and Greek mythology, combining "naga," a serpent-like creature from Thai Buddhist tradition, with "titan" from Greek legends. The second part of its name, chaiyaphumensis, honors the region where it was discovered.

Despite its massive size, Nagatitan was a vegetarian. It peacefully browsed on plants while the region's largest predator, a relative of Carcharodontosaurus, hunted nearby at just 26 feet long and 3.5 tons.

"At full size, Nagatitan likely had very little to fear in terms of predation," Sethapanichsakul told Reuters. The predators were simply too small to pose a serious threat to a full-grown adult.
