UAE Launches Green Licence with $108K Support Package

The United Arab Emirates is putting its money where its mouth is on sustainability, launching a first-of-its-kind business licence that comes with serious support for green companies.

The Expo Green Licence offers sustainability-focused businesses a benefits package worth more than $108,900, including discounted setup fees, expert advisory services, and fast-tracked intellectual property protection. It's the first licensing product in the UAE designed specifically for companies committed to environmental innovation.

Six organizations just became the first recipients, spanning climate tech, electronic waste management, recycling, and food innovation. Companies like AirJoule, WAT (We Are Tech), and Polygreen are now part of what officials call a "solutions-driven ecosystem" aimed at helping the UAE reach net zero emissions.

The licence addresses a real gap in how governments support sustainable businesses. Traditional business licences treat all companies the same, but this one recognizes that green innovators need specialized support to scale their impact.

Two pathways make it accessible to different types of companies. Established organizations can qualify directly with recognized ESG ratings, while smaller enterprises can apply through an evidence-based assessment if their work touches sustainable climate action, energy efficiency, water conservation, or circular economy solutions.

The benefits go beyond just money. Licence holders get access to the Green Majlis leadership forum, collaboration opportunities through the UAE's national sustainability platform MAJRA, and invitations to international business missions. A planned Green IP office will help companies protect their innovations faster, encouraging them to develop and localize green technologies.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative sits at the heart of Expo City Dubai's Green Innovation District, a joint project with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. The district combines sustainable infrastructure with light manufacturing facilities, research and development spaces, and funding support to create a complete ecosystem for climate-aligned businesses.

Minister of State Reem Al Hashimy emphasized that attracting and scaling sustainability-focused talent directly supports the UAE's economic diversification goals. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, noted the licence aligns with the country's "We the UAE 2031" vision to accelerate clean energy transition and enhance competitiveness in environmental innovation.

Expo City Dubai says applications are already flowing in from both local and international companies. The first six recipients represent just the beginning of what officials hope will become a thriving community of green innovators contributing real solutions to climate challenges.
