UAE Launches Naseej to End Textile Waste

Every year, the UAE throws away enough clothing and fabric to fill thousands of trucks, but that's about to change in a big way.

President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has launched Naseej, a first-of-its-kind national initiative that will transform how the entire country thinks about textiles. Instead of buying, wearing, and tossing clothes into landfills, the program creates a complete circular system where fabrics get reused, recycled, and reimagined.

The numbers tell a compelling story. The UAE currently generates about 220,000 tonnes of textile waste annually, and that mountain keeps growing. Naseej responds with a comprehensive five-pillar strategy covering collection and recycling, public awareness, behavioral research, policy development, and circular business innovation.

What makes this different from typical recycling campaigns is the scale and coordination. Four major organizations are partnering to make it work: the National Projects Office, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation, and Tadweer Group. They're bringing together government policy, industry action, research, and everyday citizens under one unified vision.

The initiative moves the textile sector away from the linear "take-make-waste" model that dominates globally. Instead, it creates an integrated system that preserves resources while capturing economic value, turning what was trash into opportunity.

Naseej represents more than just better recycling bins. It's reshaping how an entire nation thinks about consumption and waste at the policy level.

The program brings together unlikely partners: fashion retailers, recycling facilities, researchers studying consumer behavior, and volunteers ready to sort and collect used textiles. Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri emphasizes this shift from fragmented voluntary efforts to an organized national system following global best practices.

Young people and communities will play central roles through volunteering opportunities and educational programs. The goal isn't just processing waste better but changing habits so less waste gets created in the first place.

The initiative also positions the UAE as a regional leader in circular economy innovation. As other nations struggle with growing textile waste, the Emirates is showing what's possible when government, industry, and citizens work together on systemic change.
