UAE Pledges $150M to Tackle Global Water Crisis

More than 2.2 billion people still lack access to clean drinking water, but the UAE is tackling this crisis head-on with innovative solutions and serious financial commitment.

The nation announced a $150 million pledge at COP28 specifically for water scarcity solutions, alongside a $60 million "Clean Rivers" program targeting waste and water challenges across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil. These aren't empty promises—they're already translating into real infrastructure that changes lives.

In Gaza, the UAE constructed a 7.5-kilometer water pipeline that now produces around 2 million gallons of clean water daily for more than one million people. That's entire communities gaining access to something most of us take for granted every single day.

The reach extends to Africa, where Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives completed well-drilling projects in Chad that now serve approximately 65,000 Sudanese refugees. The UAE also deployed a vessel carrying 14 desalination units to Cyprus, with combined capacity to produce 15,000 cubic meters of water per day.

These efforts come as the UAE prepares to co-host the 2026 United Nations Water Conference in December alongside Senegal. The timing matters: 4 billion people experience severe water scarcity for at least one month every year, and 3.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation services.

The UAE's approach combines immediate humanitarian relief with long-term sustainable solutions through initiatives like the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and Suqia UAE. These programs focus on innovation and technology to ensure water security doesn't remain a privilege for the lucky few.
