UK Hits 2 Million Electric Vehicles in Two Years

The United Kingdom just crossed a milestone that shows how quickly the future of transportation is arriving.

Over two million electric vehicles now cruise British roads, according to the Department for Transport. What makes this number truly remarkable is the speed: it took 14 years to reach the first million EVs, but only two years to double that total.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called it a "landmark moment" in the country's shift toward cleaner mobility. The figures show 2,012,000 zero-emission vehicles were licensed by December 2025, representing a 31% jump from the previous year.

The momentum hasn't slowed in 2026. More than 137,000 electric cars and 6,600 electric vans have already been registered this year. EVs now account for 22.4% of all new car sales, up from 20.7% last year.

Government incentives have helped fuel the surge. The Electric Car Grant offers up to £3,750 off eligible vehicles priced under £50,000, making electric options accessible to more families. Fluctuating fuel prices have also pushed many drivers to consider the switch.

Rod Dennis from the RAC points to several factors driving the rapid adoption. More electric models are now available, both new and used, giving buyers real choices. Financial incentives combined with high petrol costs have made the math work for more households.

Challenges still exist, particularly for drivers without home charging access. Dennis suggests reducing VAT on public charging to match home electricity rates, which would help remove cost barriers for apartment dwellers and those who rely on public infrastructure.
