UK Solar Power Hits Record 14.4% of Electricity in July

Solar panels across Britain just shattered their own record, proving that homegrown clean energy is quietly transforming the nation's power grid.

In July 2024, solar energy supplied 14.4% of all electricity generated in the UK. That beats the previous record of 12.4% set just two months earlier in May, and represents a huge jump from the 9.6% recorded in July 2023.

The surge came thanks to extraordinary sunshine. The UK, England, and Wales all experienced their sunniest Julys on record, with England and Wales seeing their sunniest calendar month ever measured.

On a single day, July 12, solar accounted for nearly 19% of all power generated nationwide. During its peak hours between 10:30 am and midday, solar panels supplied 44% of Britain's electricity.

The success isn't just about good weather. Solar installations are booming across the country, from rooftop panels on homes to massive solar farms like the UK's largest at Cleve Hill in Kent. More solar capacity was installed in the first half of 2025 than any previous six-month period since government subsidies ended.

Government figures show solar generation jumped 34.2% compared to 2024. That growth came from both increased installations and sunny conditions working together.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks celebrated the milestone as proof that British clean energy is maturing. "After two fossil fuel crises in five years, the lesson is clear: the more power we generate here in Britain, the less exposed families and businesses are to global energy price shocks," he said.

The Ripple Effect

The solar success story reaches far beyond environmental benefits. Generating more electricity at home shields British families and businesses from volatile global energy markets that have caused painful price spikes in recent years.

It also creates jobs across the country while driving down energy costs over time. The government is pairing the solar expansion with VAT cuts on energy bills to give families immediate relief.

Chris Hewett, chief executive of Solar Energy UK, put the achievement in perspective. "Fifteen years ago, solar energy was a footnote in the electricity mix. Now it is a major player, delivering home-grown, cheap, clean and reliable energy."

The transformation has been dramatic. Renewables now produce around 60% of Britain's electricity, up from just 3% in the year 2000.
