Schools Save Millions With Solar, Fund Scholarships Instead

Over 7 million students now attend solar-powered schools, and the savings are staggering. The University of Arkansas expects to save $100 million over 25 years from its new solar arrays. McHenry High School in Illinois is cutting energy costs by 30% with 2,000 rooftop panels going up this fall.

Benjamin A. Friedman Middle School in Massachusetts is banking $35,000 every year from its rooftop system. Over the system's lifetime, that adds up to more than $1 million that can go straight to students instead of utility companies.

Schools in Pennsylvania could collectively save $342 million just by using their rooftops for solar. In North Carolina, school rooftops could generate enough clean power annually for 150,000 homes.

Some districts are getting creative with their solar partnerships. Harlem Consolidated School District in Illinois leased unused land to a solar developer. The deal funds $10,000 in student scholarships every single year for the next 25 years. That's $250,000 in scholarship money that wouldn't exist otherwise.

Sonoma State University in California covered five parking lots with solar panels. Students and staff get shaded parking spots during hot days, while the university gains predictable utility bills and backup power during outages thanks to battery storage.

The benefits go beyond money. Andover Elementary in Connecticut is using its new rooftop system to teach the whole community about sustainable investments. Friedman Middle School plans to turn its solar panels into hands-on learning opportunities for students studying renewable energy.

When schools invest in solar, everyone wins. Students learn in buildings powered by clean energy. Teachers get more resources as budgets stretch further. Communities see local institutions modeling smart financial decisions while strengthening the electrical grid.

These aren't experimental programs or risky bets. Solar panels lock in decades of predictable energy costs while fossil fuel prices swing wildly. The technology is proven, the savings are real, and the environmental benefits come free with every kilowatt-hour generated.

School administrators say the message to students matters too. "We are setting a great example to students and to taxpayers while also saving money," said Ryan McTague, superintendent at McHenry High School. "The return on the investment will go back into the school community."

Eric Boles, sustainability director at the University of Arkansas, put it simply: "It saves the university money and that frees up resources for our core mission."

From kindergartens to colleges, schools are proving that going solar isn't just good for the planet—it's brilliant for the budget and transformative for students who benefit from every dollar saved.
