Scientists are essentially building a telescope that won't give up just because a planet doesn't look like modern Earth. Water, methane or unusual combinations of gases could all hint at life doing its chemistry differently than we do.

The lesson cuts both ways. If we find a planet with no oxygen, we can't assume it's dead. And if life exists on billions of worlds across the galaxy, most of it might be living through its own invisible ages right now, waiting three billion years for someone to notice.
